Kappa is a brand well established in South African urban fashion circles and a big part of that is their relationship with football and particularly Kaizer Chiefs.

Established in the 1970s, the Kappa brand became famous in football throughout the 1980s and into the early 1990s.

It took a diversification of the investment portfolio of founder Marco Boglione, to save the apparel company from bankruptcy.

Fortunately, Boglione hitched his train to the burgeoning internet wagon and the company has not looked back.

Kappa’s presence in football

Kappa have a global presence in football supplying kits to clubs across the planet.

They are most popular in Italy where they supply the likes of Fiorentina, Brescia and Bari among others.

Kaizer Chiefs are not their only client in Africa either with Espérance of Tunisia and USM Alger among the big African players to wear Kappa.

Away from football

South African boxer and two-time IBF flyweight champion of the world Moruti Mthalane is another prominent figure to enjoy the support of Kappa.

Kappa also supply baseball, basketball, handball and fencing teams with equipment.

They are the kit supplier to the Italian national golf team and they have a strong presence in the Esports community.

Kaizer Chiefs and Kappa together again

“We are excited to team up with Kappa once again, a brand with which Kaizer Chiefs set new records and established itself as trendsetters in African football in the early 1990s,” said Chiefs’ marketing director Jessica Motaung from Italy where she finalised the deal.

“Kappa, like Kaizer Chiefs, is a unique brand of style and class and one of the key players in the global football kit space. Kappa have had great partnerships with some of the world’s leading football clubs, as well as a number of local teams over the years.

“This deal is not only an acknowledgement of our past but also an exciting leap into the future for the club.”
