Rahul Gandhi may have apologized or withdrawn the comments for which he was sentenced by a Surat court, Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday. Gandhi could have done the same and it would have ended there,” Sarma said on the sidelines of a program here.

However, Gandhi did not apologize or take back the comments from the past five years, which “shows that it was intentional and done to abuse the OBC community,” Sarma said, referring to the Surat court verdict that convicted Gandhi in a libel case and subsequent disqualification as Lok Sabha MP. However, other heads of government in the eastern region, many governed by opposition parties, have spoken out against the disqualification.
