Kate McCann gives evidence behind curtain in stalking trial

Earlier this week, the court was told Julia Wandelt claimed in a message to Kate McCann that she remembered the night of Madeleine’s abduction, stating: “I remember you came to my room before the abduction, rubbed my head and said ‘I love you and I will find you’.”

In a voicemail left for Kate McCann, Wandelt pleaded for a DNA test, saying, “You have nothing to lose, if I’m her then everybody should be okay but if I’m not, as you probably think, then I will leave you alone.”

Wandelt signed a letter delivered to the McCanns’ home as “Madeleine,” writing, “Dear mum (Kate), I’m so sorry for causing you so much distress. I felt a connection to you. I don’t like to see you being upset. All I want is to find out the truth. Yesterday I heard a lot of care and love in your voice.”

In an email to Gerry McCann, Wandelt asserted her identity, declaring, “In June 2022 I started to think I’m Madeleine McCann.. I’m not joking.”

During the trial, prosecutors referenced another voicemail where Wandelt described a false memory, claiming Kate McCann had put “a pink shoe” on her foot as a child.
