Over the course of their married lives, both Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton have been spotted pitch side at polo matches supporting their respective husbands, Prince Harry and Prince William, and wearing chic and sporty fashions.
Whether it be relaxed in denim for a regular fixture or dressed to the nines for a charity match, both royal duchesses have developed individual styles that make them blend in among the crowds of perfect polo spectators.
Here, Newsweek looks at a collection of Meghan and Kate’s top polo fashions side-by-side as Harry wraps the Los Padres polo season in Los Angeles and William takes part in an annual charity match.
Statement Dressing
Both William and Harry have participated in a number of charity polo matches throughout their adult lives, first playing the sport with their father Prince Charles regularly at the polo ground in Windsor Great Park.
On particular charity occasions where a match is being held in honor of organizations supported by the royals, it is common for one of their spouses to present the prize to the winning team.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the late Princess Diana was regularly seen presenting prizes when Charles was playing, and Queen Elizabeth II has been photographed giving prizes since the early years of her reign, including to her husband, the late Prince Philip.
When prize-giving is on the schedule for either Kate or Meghan, the royal sisters-in-law dress with a formal flair for their appearance on the polo ground.
In 2018, two months after her wedding to Harry, Meghan made an official appearance at the Sentebale polo match held in Windsor. For the occasion, the royal wore an asymmetric denim wrap dress with matching belt by designer Carolina Herrera.
The royal completed the look with a pair of chic black sunglasses and nude high-heeled pumps from a favorite shoe brand, Aquazzura.
Most recently Kate Middleton attended a charity polo match held at Guards Polo club near Windsor where William was playing in aid of a number of charities supported by both himself and Kate.
For the occasion Kate wore an elegant white sleeveless midi dress with geometric black piping from Emilia Wickstead, a brand she has worn many times this year.
The royal accessorized her look with a pair of tortoiseshell wayfarer sunglasses, statement earrings and nude shoes.
Relaxed in Denim
As well as formal charity polo matches, Meghan and Kate have also been known to support their husbands at the polo ground during regular fixtures where they can more or less blend in with the crowd.
During the 2022 Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club season, where Harry’s Los Padres team played regularly, Meghan was seen often wearing simple denim shorts with a relaxed blouse tied at the waist.
Kate, too, has opted for denim when going incognito at the polo. However, without the Los Angeles sun, she has often opted for a pair of skinny jeans over short shorts.
For a 2015 polo match in Tetbury, the village where Charles’ country home Highgrove is located, Kate wore a relaxed ensemble comprising a striped navy and white Breton top from British brand ME+EM with a pair of skinny dark-wash jeans.
Family Day Out
Though Meghan and Kate were not seen often together at polo matches before the Sussexes moved to the United States in 2020, the two sisters-in-law were both photographed attending the King Power Royal Charity Polo Day on July 10, 2019.
Both royals were relaxed in the company of their children, with Meghan seen cradling two-month-old Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, while Kate held onto her youngest son, Prince Louis.
For the occasion Meghan wore an khaki green smock dress by luxury activewear designer Lisa Marie Fernandez. The duchess paired her look with tan-woven sandals and aviator sunglasses by Stella McCartney.
In contrast to Meghan’s block-colored dress, Kate was seen wearing a light printed midi dress in shades of red with flutter sleeves from the brand L.K. Bennett.
With her dress, Kate wore a Mulberry shoulder bag, wedged espadrille shoes and fern hoop earrings by the designer Catherine Zoraida.
