NEW DELHI: An alert has been sounded and the security of key officials in Indian missions in some countries is being reviewed after pro-Khalistan elements circulated posters bearing the names and photos of two Indian diplomats posted on Canadaholding them responsible for the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar last month.
Threatening to avenge the murder of Nijjar, a designated terrorist who was shot dead by unidentified men in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18, the posters named and printed the photographs of India’s High Commissioner to Canada Sanjay Verma and the Consul General in Toronto Apoorva Srivastava. .
The posters drew a strong reaction from the Indian government, with Foreign Minister S Jaishankar saying India would raise the issue with Canada and warning that such unchecked activities would damage bilateral ties.

“We have asked our partner countries like Canada, US, UK and Australia, where Khalistani activities sometimes take place, not to give space to Khalistanis. Because their radical and extremist thinking (Khalistanis) is not good for us or for them or for our relations.” Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said. “We will raise the issue of the cartels with those governments. I think it would have been done by now,” he added. Last week, Jaishankar blamed the vote bank policy over Canada’s reluctance to act against pro-Khalistan elements. Supporters have also threatened to march on the Indian consulate in Toronto on July 8.
The sources said that Indian agencies at home and abroad suspect the role of two Khalistani supporters, Amarjot Singh and Baba Sarwan Singh, and their associates for circulating the threatening posters that were distributed on social media. Both were named in an FIR filed by the NIA in connection with the attacks on the Indian consulates in San Francisco and Ottawa in March. Amarjot is brother-in-law of jailed Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh.
Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who headed the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) terrorist team, was shot dead in a targeted killing inside the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Sahib in Surrey, British Columbia. Nijjar’s name had appeared on a list published by the government, which named 40 other designated terrorists. Last year, the NIA had declared a bounty of Rs 10 lakh on Nijjar. In addition to being the head of the KTF, Nijjar was also associated with the breakaway team Sikhs For Justice (SFJ). In 2020, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the outspoken founder of SJF, had appointed Nijjar as the team’s representative in Canada to promote the ‘Referendum-2020 campaign’. The slain Khalistani terrorist also played a crucial role in organizing the referendum in Brampton, Canada, authorities said.
India has criticized Canada after images surfaced on social media of a painting in Brampton reportedly celebrating the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. While Canada has condemned some of these activities, its law enforcement agencies have done nothing to end the aggressive and even violent campaign against India.
