King Charles cancer ghouls must stop speculating about Harry and Meghan’s return

I woke up at around 10.30pm last night and saw the Harry and Meghan news that they are returning to the UK. And then on social media I saw the ghouls had already moved in and were speculating that this means King Charles doesn’t have long left to live. To them, and everyone who is thinking of posting similar today, I say stop it, stop it, stop it now before I come down there and fight you.

Obviously the King has enough knights and members of the armed forces to stand up for him so my weak body isn’t needed in the battle. But I’ll be there. I’ll be there because, as someone who has incurable bowel cancer, I remember how p***** off I was when a district nurse asked how long I had to live. I took it slightly better when a neurology expert effectively said he hadn’t expected I’d still be alive, three years after my devastating diagnosis.

And I’ll be there still fired up by the anger I feel after being told that her company wouldn’t insure me, because no-one in my medical team has told me when I’m going to die.

A friend of mine did a Harry and Meghan a few years ago, no not a Netflix documentary but a return to the UK after living in California for more years than I can remember. When I asked why, she said she didn’t want her children to grow up in a country with so much gun violence, and that her parents aren’t getting any younger, and she wants to see them more.

And I think that’s the issue that people aren’t getting: the UK is so much better than the USA, so moving back to be closer to family just makes sense.

I say this as someone who used to live out in the States, studied at an American university, worked for an American magazine, and has had more American girlfriends than British ones.

If I’d married one of them and had children, I would have used the “move closer to family” excuse to get them away from a school system that’s so bad they learn about semi-colons in an English class in their third year of university. That’s 45 minutes of my life I’ll never get back.

So returning to the UK just in time for schools to start makes sense.

And also, going back to what my friend said about her return to the UK, no-one is getting any younger and it is nice to have family around.

Now, no matter where Prince Harry decides to live he’ll only be an armoured car ride away from being able to see his dad, and he may even be able to patch things up with his brother again.

Everything takes time and their relationship won’t ever be perfect but, as someone who completed my 69th cycle of chemotherapy yesterday (hence why I fell asleep when I got home and didn’t wake up until 10.30pm), I’ve seen a lot of families in my cancer hospital struggling to face the reality of their situation.

As well as it being a test and a fight for the cancer patient, they also have to battle to support each other to get through tough times.

This is so much easier to do when they are sitting with each other talking (or even when they are staring into their phones but just being there in the same room) rather than being thousands of miles apart.

Hopefully it will be the same for Prince Harry and Prince William.
