Kwasi Kwarteng is the UK’s new chancellor

LONDON — Kwasi Kwarteng has been appointed as Britain’s new chancellor of the exchequer, Downing Street has confirmed.

The former business secretary previously held a more junior role in the business department and was also junior minister at the former Department for Exiting the European Union.

Downing Street also confirmed on Tuesday James Cleverly takes over as foreign secretary.

Cleverly, who was made education secretary in July in an emergency reshuffle after a raft of Boris Johnson’s ministers resigned, was previously Britain’s Europe minister at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

Both Cleverly and Kwarteng backed Britain’s departure from the EU and were early backers of new Prime Minister Liz Truss in the Tory leadership contest.
