Letters: British democracy is sick when an MP is threatened for pro-Israel views

SIR – How unhappy {that a} conscientious, hard-working MP (and competent junior minister) like Mike Freer has been compelled out by the mob (“Professional-Israeli Tory minister to stop after loss of life threats”, report, February 1).

Mr Freer has been a steadfast buddy of the Jewish neighborhood and of Israel ever since he was first elected as MP for Finchley and Golders Inexperienced in 2010. He will likely be missed.

SIR – What kind of a rustic have we grow to be after we can not or won’t give efficient safety to a Member of Parliament who has been intimidated for a decade over his assist for Israel?

MPs are the cornerstone of our democracy. Our failure to confront those that wish to undermine our lifestyle is solely emboldening them.

SIR – Mike Freer is to resign, having been left fearing for his life after repeated threats from Islamic extremists.

Each Saturday the Mayor of London permits hate marches in opposition to Jewish folks within the capital. The Muslim Brotherhood and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps are nonetheless not proscribed teams, that means that they’re able to function legally on British soil.

These are only a few outrageous cases of Islamic extremists being let off, regardless of posing a menace to Britain’s nationwide safety. Our leaders should take a more durable stance.

SIR – John Walker’s letter (January 31) is vast of the mark.

Nobody who criticises – even harshly – the present Israeli authorities’s struggle techniques is, on that foundation alone, labelled an anti-Semite. That might be ludicrous and, by and giant, it merely doesn’t occur.

Individuals are, nonetheless, accurately known as out on their anti-Semitism after they make grotesque comparisons between Israel and Nazi Germany; after they accuse Israel – a state that they reject in its entirety – of intentionally instigating a genocide; or after they focus their ire unrelentingly on Israel’s selections, whereas saying nothing about the actions of – as an example – Russia, China, Syria, North Korea or Iran.

SIR – On Monday, Hamas launched additional rocket strikes in opposition to targets in Israel.

Israel is correct to not conform to a ceasefire as a result of, in contrast to lots of our flesh pressers, it isn’t naive sufficient to consider that Hamas will abide by any settlement.
