Lewis Hamilton overtakes Michael Schumacher’s record after 92nd Grand Prix win

Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton has overtaken Michael Schumacher’s record after winning his 92nd Grand Prix.

“You are re-writing the history books,” Mercedes told Hamilton on the team radio.

The British star, who equalled Schumacher’s 91 wins in the previous race at the Nurburgring in Germany, took the chequered flag in Portugal 25.592 seconds ahead of second-placed team-mate Valtteri Bottas.

Dutch driver Max Verstappen was third for Red Bull.

Hamilton said he could “never have dreamed of being where I am today”.

“I can’t find the words at the moment,” he said, adding that it is “going to take some time to fully sink in”.

Hamilton’s latest victory – plus a bonus point for fastest lap – stretches his lead over Bottas in the championship table to 77 points with only five races remaining.

“I owe it all to these guys here and back at the factory,” he said.

“It’s just been such a privilege working with them.”

Hamilton, whose father Anthony was at the circuit in the Algarve to see his triumph, reported cramp in his right calf muscle with seven laps to go but went on to set a series of fastest laps.

Speaking after his eighth win of the season and the 71st since joining Mercedes, he said: “I didn’t have a magic ball when I chose to come to this team and partner with great people, but here I am and what I can tell you is I’m trying to make the most of it every single day.

“I was still pushing flat out coming across the line.”

Sir Jackie Stewart, who won three drivers’ championships, congratulated Hamilton on his “remarkable success”.

Sir Jackie added: “I take my hat off to him for his considerable achievements and I wish him well for his continuing career.”
