Islamabad: Sindh authorities in Pakistan said normal activities can resume from Saturday as the threat of Cyclone Biparjoy in the Arabian Sea off the province’s coast has been averted after it weakened to a cyclonic storm.
In a statement on Friday night, Muhammad Iqbal Memon, the Karachi commissioner, said that all halted exams and educational activities can resume on Saturday as the threat of cyclone danger has subsided, the Xinhua news agency reports.
The storm is still 145 km from Pakistan and the wind speed is 80 to 90 km/h, the NDMA added.
Speaking to the media, the country’s Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman said there was heavy rain in several areas of Sindh but no loss of life was reported due to the precautionary measures taken by the government before the cyclone hit. the province. .
He added that several coastal areas were inundated by high sea levels, but most people had been evacuated to safe areas, so no one was harmed.
However, the Pakistan Meteorological Department said in its advisory that even though the cyclone has weakened, people should still take precautionary measures and refrain from visiting the coast as sea conditions can be rough.
The weather office also alerted fishermen to avoid venturing out to sea until the system ended on Saturday.
The department also forecast heavy rain along with winds of 80 to 100 kilometers per hour in coastal areas through Saturday.
