Limescale will dissolve from taps in 15 minutes using 1 kitchen ingredient

Limescale is a familiar sight in many bathrooms, particularly for households living in hard water areas.

Hard water has a high mineral content and when it evaporates, it leaves behind deposits of calcium and magnesium which then build up to form limescale. Being the wettest room in the house makes bathrooms particularly susceptible to this chalky scourge, especially taps which are in frequent use on a daily basis. But how quickly limescale forms can depend on various factors like the hardness of the water and how often appliances are cleaned, and if the substance isn’t removed, it can eventually lead to problems like restricted water flow, leaks and drips, so it’s well worth addressing the problem early.

Removing limescale doesn’t have to be an expensive and laborious affair as it can actually be tackled in just 15 minutes with a simple homemade solution using one ingredient you likely already have knocking around in your kitchen: white vinegar.

White vinegar is an effective tool for tackling stubbonr limescale as it contains acetic acid which breaks down limescale naturally without the need for harsh chemicals.

The vinegar reacts with the calcium carbonate in limescale when it’s applied, dissolving the substance so it can easily be wiped clean without too much elbow grease. Plus it has the added benfit of being non-toxic and biodegradable.

Explaining the benefits of white vinege, Wendy Graham, cleaning expert at Moral Fibres, said: “Vinegar is non-toxic and eco-friendly compared to conventional cleaning products.

“And it’s just so much more effective at tackling soap scum, limescale and all the other yucky things our bathrooms and kitchens can throw at us.

“The reason vinegar is so effective is its acidity. The pH level of vinegar is strong enough to dissolve soap scum, dirt, and grease. And it is especially good at dissolving limescale – that chalky build-up you find in hard water areas.”

To banish stubborn limescale from your taps, cleaning manufacturer Karcher recommends regularly descaling your taps to prevent the substance from forming a thick coating over time.

It suggests dismantling the nozzle into three parts and placing these in white vinegar for 15 minutes, after which the limescale should have fully dissolved and will be ready to wipe clean.

In its online advice, Karcher said: “For particularly calciferous water in the home, we recommend regularly descaling the tap. In doing so, you should not only clean the entire fitting, but also carefully remove the deposits from the tap aerator or mixer jet on the tap in particular.

“For cleaning, unscrew the tap aerator or mixer jet by hand or using a pipe wrench. It is best to wrap a cloth around the tap in order to prevent scratches in the precious metal when unscrewing.

“Then dismantle the nozzle into three parts: A filter, a union nut and a gasket. Place all three parts in vinegar or vinegar essence for approximately 15 minutes until the limescale dissolves.

“Citric acid has the same effect. Simply dissolve half a tablespoon of citric acid powder in 100 ml warm water and place the parts in this. After descaling, rinse everything in clean water and reassemble.”
