LISTEN: Jessie Duarte slams Zondo, backs Zuma in explosive leaked clip

Senior members in the ANC are at the mercy of a ‘mole’ it seems, after another secret audio clip was publicly leaked on Tuesday. Just days after Cyril Ramaphosa’s private conversation with Jacob Zuma was uploaded online, Deputy Secretary-General Jessie Duarte has suffered the same fate – but her utterances are much more explosive.

What did Jessie Duarte say in the leaked audio clip?

The senior politician can be heard criticising Raymond Zondo, who is currently the head of the State Capture Inquiry. The DCJ has had a number of high-profile showdowns with Jacob Zuma – who may yet go to prison for ducking the Commission. Duarte, however, has picked her side in the ongoing battle…

“It’s not as though we don’t see what is happening at the Zondo Commission… it has been turned into a court, it’s no longer a Commission. They have become prosecutorial. A colleague of mine was summoned to the State Capture Inquiry, and one week later, he was facing a criminal court case. These issues must be examined.”

“There must be a solution for Mr. Zuma. I personally don’t think comrade Zuma must go to that Commission. It would not be a good thing to do, given his history with Zondo. There was also the unfortunate way in which the DCJ presented himself, after presiding over his own [recusal] case.” | Jessie Duarte

ANC stalwart blasts Zondo, backs Zuma in explosive soundbite

It’s believed that the audio comes from a tense ANC Top 6 meeting conducted earlier this month. With all issues up for discussion, Jessie Duarte seemingly directed her focus on the judiciary of South Africa.

After tuning the Deputy Chief Justice, she then laid into Zondo’s senior – Mogoeng Mogoeng. The 67-year-old accused the Chief Justice of ‘having no understanding of the Constitution’, and fears his religious beliefs are a danger to South Africa.

“The judiciary needs to stand up to a different set of principles than what it’s doing right now. The Chief Justice of our country [Mogoeng Mogoeng] behaves as if he has no understanding of the Constitution. He cannot change the state from a secular position to one of Christianity. Apartheid and the Nazis also led through religion.”
