Australia’s energy debate is heating up with Opposition Leader Peter Dutton accusing Energy Minister Chris Bowen of interfering in the CSIRO’s GenCost report released on Monday.
Tonight, Mr Bowen will debate Coalition energy spokesperson Ted O’Brien live on 7.30 and the ABC will be providing live coverage and streaming of the event.

The comments saw Mr Bowen hit back on 7.30.
“That’s deeply offensive, not to me, but to the CSIRO. I’m deeply offended that the Opposition would accuse them of being subject to political interference when they have, for the best part of 100 years, been completely independent of any politician, of any political interference. They’ve brought this report out at complete arm’s length from government and its findings are just inarguable.”
The report said that building a nuclear power plant in Australia would likely cost twice as much as renewable energy, even accounting for the much longer life span of reactors.
The previous GenCost report was criticised over suggestions that it failed to properly account for a nuclear reactor’s long life, which could be anywhere up to 60 or even 80 years.
Its release comes in a week where there is speculation the Coalition will release its costings to build seven taxpayer-funded nuclear power plants in Australia.
On Monday, Mr Dutton claimed the assumptions used in the CSIRO’s methodology were flawed.
“They haven’t seen our plan yet and yet they’re out bagging it,” Mr Dutton said.
“It just looks to me like there’s a heavy hand of Chris Bowen in all of this and I don’t think people want to see that.”
Nationals leader David Littleproud echoed the claims made by Mr Dutton.
“I think the CSIRO have been set up to do the government’s dirty work,” Mr Littleproud told Sky News.
“They’re not the pre-eminent organisation that should be tasked to look at nuclear energy in this country.”
Mr Bowen defended the GenCost report and described the Coalition’s nuclear plan as “wildly optimistic” before claiming the opposition was wrong to dismiss the report as led by Labor.
“GenCost was started by the previous government in 2017. We never second-guessed it when we were in opposition,” Mr Bowen said.
