Luxembourg PM Bettel admitted to hospital with coronavirus

Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, who tested positive for coronavirus just over a week ago, was admitted to hospital Sunday.

Local media reported that Bettel, 48, was admitted as a precaution and would spend 24 hours under observation while undergoing tests.

News of the positive diagnosis on June 27 came just two days after Bettel attended a European Council summit with fellow EU national leaders.

Bettel’s office determined that none of the other leaders at the summit were among his “close contacts” as precautions such as mask-wearing and social distancing were observed, a Council official said at the time.

Bettel received a first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine in early May.
