Luxembourg PM Bettel tests positive for coronavirus

Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel has tested positive for the coronavirus and gone into self-isolation.

News of the positive diagnosis, announced by his office on Sunday, came just two days after Bettel attended a European Council summit with fellow EU national leaders.

Bettel’s office has determined that none of the other leaders at the summit were among his “close contacts” as precautions such as mask-wearing and social distancing were observed, a Council official said.

Bettel, 48, is said to have mild symptoms including fever and headache, Luxemburger Wort newspaper reported. He plans to stay home for 10 days and continue working.

Bettel received a first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine in early May.

The Luxembourg premier played a prominent role at last week’s European Council, speaking about his personal struggles to be accepted as a gay man as he forcefully criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán over anti-LGBTQ+ measures.
