Macron to meet Scholz in Berlin on Monday

French President Emmanuel Macron will head to Berlin on Monday to meet German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the Elysée Palace announced Thursday.

Macron is visiting the German capital on his first trip abroad after his recent reelection, in line with an established tradition for Paris and Berlin.

Last December, a freshly sworn-in Scholz visited Paris two days after his inauguration in Germany.

During the visit on May 9, Macron and Scholz will discuss the situation in Ukraine, as well as European sovereignty. “The discussion will focus in particular on defense and energy issues,” according to a statement from the Élysée, as countries around the EU weigh the European Commission’s plan for a sixth package of sanctions against Russia.

Macron and Scholz will also discuss international issues in the context of the German presidency of the G7, which is set to meet at the end of June. The situation in the Sahel, the Western Balkans, EU-China relations and bilateral issues will also be on the agenda, according to the statement.
