Lidl has submitted a new application for a major development in an English town. The German retailer has previously announced plans to expand across the UK, with the aim of opening scores of new stores in the coming years. It has submitted several planning applications over the past 12 months, with its latest pertaining to a new proposal for Wantage in Oxfordshire, England.
The retailer is seeking to adjust conditions on a previously approved application for a site on Grove Road. It includes a sustainable drainage scheme, parking and turning spaces, and landscaping, as well as provisions for electric vehicle (EV) charging. There is already a Lidl store on the site, and the new planning application seeks to allow adjustments to that store. The application is listed under reference P26/V1891/S73, categorised as a major development.
The application was made to the Vale of White Horse District Council back in May, with a consultation open until August 5. According to the council’s listing, no appeals have been received.
It comes just months after the store opened in December 2025. Planning permission was initially secured for the news store in 2022, but then a new version was also accepted in the summer of 2024.
Kate Bleloch, the regional head of property at Lidl GB, said ahead of the store’s opening: “We’re thrilled to be joining the community in Wantage and Grove and are excited to welcome the first shoppers through our doors. We’ve been creating Lidl fans across Oxfordshire and are excited to now bring our much-loved products to shoppers here.”
It is one of several planning applications submitted by Lidl in the UK in recent months.
