West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee offered on Monday to extend support for Congress in states where the latter is strong, provided her Trinamool Congress is reciprocated in the same way by Congress in the state.
However, the state Congress leadership has rejected the proposal on their part, saying the Chief Minister’s reluctance to acknowledge the impact of Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra at the national level actually validates his actual impression on the Congress.
“From the beginning, I have been saying that the parties that have strong points in the respective regions should directly confront the BJP there… like AAP in Delhi, RJD-JD-U in Bihar, Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh and DMK-Congress. in Tamil. Nadu Congress and Trinamool in West Bengal. We supported the Congress in Karnataka, now they should pay us the same in West Bengal. It is not right for Karnataka to enjoy our support and oppose us in West Bengal,” Banerjee said.
However, the State Congress Speaker, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, completely rejected their claims to support the Congress in Karnataka.
“She claims to lift the slogan of not voting BJP in Karnataka. But even for once, she appealed to the people of Karnataka to vote for the Congress? Our fight against the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal will continue,” Chowdhury said. .
On Saturday, after the Karnataka election results were announced, the Chief Minister, through a Twitter message and her remarks to the media, congratulated the people of Karnataka on the results. However, she kept silent about the Congress even when questioned by the media on this matter.
“I’ve said everything I had to say,” he said.
Chowdhury reacted immediately, saying that Trinamool is actually against a united opposition alliance. “MPs from his (Mamata Banerjee’s) party abstained from voting when we fielded a united opposition candidate against Jagdeep Dhankhar in the vice-presidential polls. Trinamool is also not inclined to any floor coordination within Parliament,” he said he.
