A man has died after a shark attack at a popular beach at tourist hotspot Fraser Island.

The 36-year-old was scuba diving in waters off Indian Head just before 2pm when he was bitten on the leg, causing him to lose a lot of blood.

Bystanders helped pull him from the water, then a doctor and nurse who were already at the beach provided first aid.
