Man fatally shoots 2, wounds 3 officers and woman in North Texas, police say

A gunman killed two people and wounded three police officers and another resident in the Fort Worth area of Texas on Saturday evening before he turned a weapon on himself, police said.

A man and a woman were killed and an “elderly female” who called in the incident had injuries not thought to be life-threatening, police said.

On Sunday, police identified the two people killed as Collin Davis, 33, and Amber Tsai, 32. Possible relationships to each other or to the shooter are part of the investigation.

The motive has not been determined, police said.

The injured officers were identified Sunday as Cpl. Zach Tabler, Officer Tim Barton and Officer Jose Avila. “They were immediately met by gunfire,” Haltom City Police Sgt. Rick Alexander said.

Tabler, who was struck in a leg, arm and hand, underwent surgery and was recovering, Haltom City Police Chief Cody Phillips said.

Barton was treated for a leg injury and released from a hospital Sunday. Avila sustained wounds to both legs and was awaiting surgery, Phillips said

City Manager Rex Phelps described the attack on the three as an ambush.

“Our officers actions were courageous and heroic, as they engaged the suspect, who ambushed them as they arrived on scene,” he said.

Police were alerted to the shooting around 6:45 p.m. Saturday, NBC Dallas-Fort Worth reported.

A lengthy manhunt was launched for the shooter, and residents in the surrounding area were advised to stay in their homes, the station reported.

Police have said the suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“He had a military-style rifle near him and a handgun within the vicinity of his arm,” Alexander said Saturday.

He said it appeared officers had returned fire. It wasn’t clear if any of the rounds struck the suspect.

On Sunday, police identified the suspect as Edward Freyman, 28.

The Texas Rangers will be taking over the investigation.
