Man given 33 years following 2015 murder of then girlfriend’s mom

A 48-year-old man has been sentenced to 33 years behind bars after being convicted of the unlawful possession of an automatic firearm, the unlawful possession of ammunition and murder.

Khumalo was convicted of killing his girlfriend’s mother in 2015

Mpumalanga spokesperson for the Hawks Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi explained that this follows an incident that occurred in December 2015. Captain Sekgotodi said Bhuti Khuli Khumalo murdered his then-girlfriend’s mother at Clau-Clau in Kabokweni.

“He entered the house of his then-girlfriend and fatally shot her mother, in front of her and her siblings. The couple had an argument prior to the incident. The accused then left the crime scene,”

said Sekgotodi.

The investigation was transferred to the Hawks serious organised crime investigation team in Nelspruit. Khumalo was tracked and arrested at his hideout in Kabokweni on 16 February 2016.

The accused attempted to flee to Mozambique in 2019

Since his arrest, Khumalo has been in court a number of times and was later granted bail. He missed his court appearances following his release on bail and a warrant for his arrest was issued.

Sekgotodi explained that authorities worked hard to track him down. He was arrested while attempting to flee to Mozambique in 2019. Khumalo was kept in custody until his conviction on 12 May 2022.

IOL reports that on Thursday, 11 August, Khumalo was sentenced to 15  years for murder, 15 years for the unlawful possession of a firearm and three years for the unlawful possession of ammunition. It was ordered that his sentences for the murder and unlawful possession of a firearm run concurrently.
