Man killed in horror 17th floor flat fire as child and two adults rescued

A man has died following a house fire in London, with three other people rescued from the terrifying blaze. London Fire Brigade (LBF) were called to called to a flat fire on Blackwall Way in Poplar at around 4.35am on Saturday.

Crews from Poplar, Whitechapel, Plaistow, Stratford, Shadwell, East Ham, East Greenwich, Bethnal Green and Greenwich fire stations were all mobilised. They found a two-bedroom flat and balcony ablaze on the 17th floor of a 22-storey block of flats and had to rescue two adults and one child.

A man was also sadly declared dead at the scene. Fifty other people fled the scene before firefighters arrived and were taken to a rest centre.

The cause of the fire his now being investigated by LFB’s Fire Investigation Team.

LFB said: “Sadly, a man has died following a fire in Poplar. Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were called to a flat fire on Blackwall Way in Poplar.

“A two-room flat and balcony on the 17th floor of a 22-storey residential block of flats was damaged by fire. Two adults and one child were rescued by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus. Sadly, a man was declared dead at the scene.

“A further 50 people left the building before the Brigade arrived on scene and are currently at a rest centre.

“The Brigade’s 999 Control officers were called at 0435 and mobilised crews from Poplar, Whitechapel, Plaistow, Stratford, Shadwell, East Ham, East Greenwich, Bethnal Green and Greenwich fire stations. The fire was under control by 0641.

“There are a range of factors that are being investigated regarding the cause of the fire by the Brigade’s Fire Investigation Team.”
