Pimpri-Chinchwad Police arrested a scammer for calling educational institutions claiming to be a person attached to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) in Mumbai. The police identified the accused as Rahul Rajendra Palande (31), a resident of Keshav Nagar, Chinchwad.
The CMO filed a complaint at the Hinjewadi Police Station on the matter on 21 May. According to a press release issued on Thursday, the defendant Palande did not hold any official position in the CMO and did not work with any department of the Maharashtra government.
However, claiming to be a CMO staff member, he allegedly contacted Symbiosis Institute of Business Management (SIBM) in Lavale and Bengaluru over the phone regarding the admission of some students.
To give the impression that he was working with CMO, Palande kept the Maharashtra government logo as his profile picture on ‘True Call’ and WhatsApp number.
It also allegedly showed “CMO, PRO Office, Eknath Bhai Shinde, Mumbai Mantralaya, Government of Maharashtra” along with Google Mantralaya’s location in Mumbai, on his WhatsApp profile. After receiving the complaint, the criminal branch tracked down Palande’s location and arrested him on Wednesday.
A FIR TREE has been registered against you at Hinjewadi Police Station under Sections 417, 419, 420, 467, 468, 469, 472, 488, 170, 171 of Indian Penal Code and Sections of Information Technology Act ( YOU). Police said the defendant is suspected of contacting different educational organizations under the pretense of being a CMO staff member for the admission of some students.
A court has placed him in police custody until May 29.
