A mob in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Thursday vandalized and burned down the venue of a program that Prime Minister N Biren Singh is due to attend on Friday.
New Lamka police quickly sprang into action and dispersed the crowd, but not before the venue was damaged with hundreds of chairs burning.
The mob managed to partially burn down the newly installed open gym at the PT Sports complex in New Lamka, which Biren Singh was scheduled to open on Friday afternoon, police said.
The nighttime attack happened even as the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum called for a full lockdown of Churachandpur from 8am to 4pm. The Forum stated that despite repeated memoranda to the government protesting an ongoing eviction campaign to clear forested areas reserved for farmers and other tribal settlers, “the government has shown no sign of willingness or sincerity in addressing the plight of the people.
Apart from the inauguration of the open gym, Biren is also scheduled to attend another function organized by a local group at Sadbhavna Mandap.
