LAHORE:

The appearance of Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz’s (PML-N’s) Vice-President Maryam Nawaz before the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in an illegal land case was cancelled on Tuesday after scuffles broke out between the police and party supporters.

“Police attacking my car,” Maryam wrote on twitter. “Imagine if it were not a bullet proof vehicle. Shame.”

The incident occurred as the PML-N leader was on her way to NAB along with her husband, Captain (retd) Safdar and other party leaders, Rana Sanaullah, Pervez Rashid and Talal Chaudhry.

A heavy contingent of police was deployed outside NAB to avoid any incident. Party workers fought and pelted stones at the law enforcers as they tried to stop them from advancing further and entering the NAB premises.

Police used tear gas, water cannons and stones to disperse the PML-N workers, resulting in injuring to several party supporters.

According to Express, the window of Maryam’s vehicle was also broken during the incident which she accused the police of.

On August 8, the details of summon issued to Maryam for “illegally acquiring” hundreds of acres of land in Raiwind were revealed.

The national graft-buster had asked Maryam to appear before its combined investigation team on August 11 and bring details of 1,400 kanals she allegedly acquired in Raiwind in 2013 in violation of rules/law.

NAB had sought complete details regarding the sale and purchase of land and asked the PML-N leader from where and when the funds for acquiring the the land were arranged.

Maryam was also required to submit details of duty and tax payment for the purchase of the said land along with particulars for the sale of any of its portions.

The anti-graft watchdog also asked the PML-N vice-president if the land had been bought for agriculture or commercial use.

According to sources, the Sharif family in 2013 had acquired 3,568 kanals allegedly in connivance with a former DCO and an ex-DG of the Lahore Development Authority during the tenure of Shehbaz Sharif as chief minister.

Out of it, 1,936 kanals were allotted to the Sharif brothers’ mother Shamim Bibi, 96 kanals each to Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif and 1,440 to Maryam.
