Melissa D. Hum

Melissa D. Hum, 93, of Columbiana, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at Shepherd of the Valley in Poland, Ohio.

She was born on Jan. 5, 1932, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late Milan and Jessica Cusick Kovac.

Melissa attended the University of Pittsburgh where she met her future husband, Robert W. Hum. They later married on Dec. 24, 1950, and had three children, Robert, Melinda, and Jenifer.

Melissa and Robert moved to San Diego, California, in the late 1970s and returned to Columbiana in 2005. Melissa mostly devoted her life to her family, but she also worked as a bank teller at the Home Savings Bank in Columbiana for quite a while. She was also very active in the Eastern Star in both Columbiana, Ohio, and San Diego, California, in the 1970s. Melissa and Robert also attended the Methodist Church in Columbiana.

Melissa was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Robert, on Aug. 23, 2016, and her brother, George Kovac. Melissa is survived by her son, Robert W. Hum II (Margo), of Columbiana; two daughters, Melinda J, Hum and Jenifer Vidra, both of Oceanside, California; five grandchildren, Kathleen M. Klapkowski (Gary), of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Robert W. Hum III, James F. Hum, and Joseph G. Hum, all of Columbiana, Ohio, and Stephanie Williams (Chad) of Salem, Oregon; and two beloved great-grandchildren, Audrey and Margo Klapkowski.

Per Melissa’s wishes, no services will be held. She will be laid to rest with her husband at the Columbiana Cemetery. Memorial donations in Melissa’s memory may be made to any American Legion or VFW of the donor’s choice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home in Columbiana, Ohio.
