Snow could hit parts of Britain again this month as forecasts warn of plunging temperatures and wintry conditions in a fresh March weather forecast. The Met Office has identified northern and western high ground as the areas most at risk of snowfall during brief colder snaps expected through the coming weeks.
Mountain regions of Scotland are most likely to see wintry showers, but forecasters say upland areas of north-west England – including parts of the Lake District – and higher ground in Wales could also be affected. Britain is facing an unsettled run of weather driven by Atlantic systems bringing bands of rain, blustery showers and strong winds. Western and north-western regions are expected to bear the brunt of the wet and windy conditions, while southern and eastern areas may see longer dry spells and brighter interludes. However, forecasts show that temperatures could drop sharply at times, raising the risk of overnight frost and snow on hills.
These colder interludes may develop suddenly, increasing the chances of disruptive wintry showers in exposed areas.
The Met Office website reads: “Temperatures will be near average for the period as a whole, but with some shorter-duration colder interludes at times when frost and hill snow will be possible.”
The warning comes as a yellow alert for strong winds was issued for parts of north-west Scotland earlier this week.
Severe gales are forecast to sweep across the Outer and Inner Hebrides before spreading to other exposed mainland areas and Orkney.
Gusts of 65 to 70mph were expected widely, with a small chance that some locations could see winds reach up to 80mph. Travel disruption is possible, including delays to road, rail, air and ferry services, while coastal communities may face large waves and sea spray.

Snow risk is mainly in the north and west of the UK, including:
North-west England uplands – especially the Lake District fells
Pennines (northern hills of England)
Higher ground in North Wales (Snowdonia/Eryri area)
Other elevated rural areas across northern Britain
Areas with a lower but possible risk during colder snaps
Exposed rural routes in the north
Looking further ahead, the Met Office says weather patterns could become more blocked towards late March and early April.
The forecast went on to read: “Weather patterns may become more blocked later in March, increasing the chance of colder conditions developing for a time.”
Britain may be in for rapidly changing conditions as the UK heads deeper into a volatile early spring weather pattern.
This scenario can increase the likelihood of chilly easterly winds developing, which historically have been linked with late-season snowfall.
Drivers should remain cautious and stay updated with the latest forecasts as conditions could change rapidly.
