Why did the Mets make this move?
For some time now, Steve Cohen, Billy Eppler and the Mets have been talking about building a sustainable winner in Queens. With the major league club struggling mightily this season and Escobar’s role diminished, the Mets saw an opportunity to bring in some minor league talent, and were willing to cover Escobar’s salary for the rest of the season to do so. .
“The Angels had a need and we had a bit of a surplus,” Eppler said. “It’s a testament to Steve and his commitment to the project here. …. We won’t get these players if Steve doesn’t cover the money.”
(That’s a notable change from how the Mets consistently operated under the Wilpons late last decade, when they never collected the money from the players they traded.)
Even as a backup, Escobar had been a useful player for the Mets (his OPS is .897 over the past two months), so they’ll be relying on someone younger to step in. that could be Mark Winds, which just shipped over the weekend. — British
Does this mean the Mets will be sellers?
While the timing here is surprising, it’s premature to see this as the first month-long sale of the Mets’ current roster. The Angels started the trade conversation because of their infield needs, and the Mets were willing to listen because of their other options to fill Escobar’s job.

Why Los Angeles made this trade
The Angels made this trade due to a myriad of infield injuries over the past 10 days. the team lost gio urshela for the season Antonio Rendon he’s out with a sore wrist. And the starting shortstop Zach Net he’s dealing with an oblique injury. The Angels wanted a proven third baseman to start for the foreseeable future and serve as an insurance option for Rendon, who is frequently injured. The Angels are desperate to win this season and felt they had to make a move to stay competitive. — Blum
Angels look to be buyers at the deadline
Losing Marceaux and Crow isn’t irrelevant to the Angels. They are ranked among the top 20 prospects in the organization. Crow’s profile has risen steadily in the organization over the years since he was taken in the 28th round over slot value. Marceaux has a 4.88 ERA in 59 innings this year at Double-A. The Angels expect to be buyers at the deadline, and this trade affects their ability to acquire more players before Aug. 1. Blum
