Veteran Hollywood actor Michael Douglas was warmly welcomed at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival by the Indian Pavilion. The actor took the Pavilion and addressed those present. The American actor talked about his love for India and Indian movies. He also said: “Cinema is an international language.” He was also congratulated by Shailendra Singh, who welcomed the actor on stage.
Filmmaker Shailendra Singh, who moderated the session at the India Pavilion, recalled the actor’s last trip to Mumbai with his wife and hoped they would revive an old film the duo was supposed to make 15 years ago. In response to the filmmaker’s statement, Michael said: “If you find a project that we can do together, I would like to come back to India… Film is an international language.”
Michael Douglas was also congratulated with an honorary Palme d’Or at the 76th Cannes Film Festival for his contribution to cinema. The actor said: “It’s always a breath of fresh air to be in Cannes, which has long provided a wonderful platform for bold creators, artistic audacity and storytelling excellence.
From my first time here in 1979 for The China Syndrome to my most recent premiere of Behind the Candelabra in 2013, the festival has always reminded me that the magic of cinema is not only in what we see on the screen but in its ability to impact. people from all over the world”.
At Cannes, he also recalled how difficult it was for audiences to digest the intimate scenes in his film Basic Instinct when it was screened back in the 1990s. He said: “Seeing a lot of those sex scenes on the big screen at the Grand Palais, it was a bit overwhelming for a lot of people. Afterwards we had a very quiet dinner; everyone was digesting it.”
