Former President Donald Trump was shortsighted when he pushed for the Abraham Accords between Israel and some Arab nations. In doing so, he set in motion the events leading to the current Palestinian-Israeli crisis.
The pact was like a Band-Aid on an infected wound. It accomplished little in terms of regional peace. Moreover, because only some Arab countries were signatories, it lacked substance. This is why a comprehensive agreement involving all of the competing interests in the region is necessary.
Representatives should meet now to discuss the issues and what is at stake. It has been a long time since such an attempt was made. This region is now on the path to a war involving nuclear weapons. So it’s worth a try before it’s too late.
