Missing teen raped by paedophile who found her on a bench near Wetherspoon

An 18-year-old girl who had been reported missing was raped by a man who said he’d help her but then assaulted her in his flat. Calum Lewsley preyed on the vulnerable stranger after he had met her on the street. She had been sitting on a bench near the Kirky Puffer Whetherspoon bar in Kirkintilloch, Scotland, last May 6, when the 31-year-old approached her. Earlier, she had been reported as missing.

The predator asked if she was “alright” before suggesting they go to his home nearby to charge his phone, and then she could call the police to report where she was. Lewsley suggested the girl go to his bedroom when they got to his house. The High Court in Glasgow heard that the teenager soon became “frightened” as Lewsley started kissing and groping the victim, claiming she was “beautiful”. The hearing was told Lewsley eventually went on to rape the girl.

Following the assault, Lewsley himself called the police, stating the girl was missing and “vulnerable”.

He was with the victim in the street when he flagged down a passing police car. When the girl got to the car, she told the police that she had been “raped by the male” who had made the earlier call.

The court was told Lewsley went on to give an “erratic” account of what he said happened to a woman he knew. He was later arrested, but made no comment when quizzed. Lewsley pled guilty to the rape of the teenager.

The court was told he already had a number of convictions for sex crimes, violence and dishonesty.

The judge said with “considerable hesitation” he had decided not to call for a full risk assessment, which could have seen the rapist eventually made subject of an Order for Lifelong Restriction.

He further told Lewsley: “The rape itself was sustained. You were, at the time, the subject of various court-imposed community supervision orders.”

In addition to the jail term, Lewsley will be monitored for a further five years on his eventual release.
