McConnell’s office revealed that the Senate’s top Republican, who is 81, also suffered a minor rib fracture as a result of falling at a Republican event in downtown DC.
“On the advice of his doctor, his next step will be a period of physical therapy in an inpatient rehabilitation facility before he returns home,” David Popp, McConnell’s director of communications, said in a statement.
“During the course of treatment this weekend, Leader’s medical team discovered that he also suffered a minor rib fracture on Wednesday, for which he is also being treated.” “The Leader and Secretary Chao are deeply grateful for the qualified medical care, prayers and kindness they have received.”
McConnell fell at the Waldorf Astoria hotel during an event for the Senate Leadership Fund attended by other Republican senators.
It’s unclear how long McConnell’s recovery will last. The Senate faces multiple absentees this week, with Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) undergoing treatment for depression and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) recovering from a bout of shingles.
In 2019, McConnell suffered a fall that required shoulder surgery and weeks of recovery at home.
Earlier this year, the Kentucky Republican, who has held the position since 1984, became the party’s longest-serving leader in the Senate.
