WASHINGTON ― Senate Minority Leader mitch mcconnell (R-Ky.) declined to address the allegation of donald trump about his return to the upper house this week, continuing his pattern of avoiding issues involving the former president.
“I may have hit my head, but I didn’t hit it that hard. Nice try,” McConnell told reporters who asked if the leading Republican candidate for the 2024 presidency has been criminally charged in a case involving an adult film star.
McConnell, 81, was absent from the Senate for a month due to a head injury.
trump is loaded with 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal secret money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election, which prosecutors said was part of an illegal “scheme” to mislead voters. She pleaded not guilty in a dramatic court appearance earlier this month.
While McConnell is silent, others republicans have criticized the case brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, calling it politically charged and legally dubious. Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), one of Trump’s biggest Republican critics, said Bragg “has worked his way up to felony criminal charges to fit a political agenda.”
In 2021, McConnell suggested that Trump could face criminal prosecution for his actions after voting not to convict him in his impeachment trial following the January 6 attack on Congress.
“President Trump is still responsible for everything he did while in office, as an ordinary citizen, unless the statute of limitations has expired, he is still responsible for everything he did while in office, he didn’t get out of office. with his still, still,” McConnell said at the time.
