Mobilized Russians get free sperm storage: Report

The Russian government will pay for sperm storage and some infertility treatment for soldiers mobilized to fight the war on Ukraine, Igor Trunov, the president of the Russian Union of Lawyers, told the state news agency TASS.

Russia will pay for the collection and storage of sperm cells in cryobanks out of the federal budget “for citizens mobilized to participate in the special military operation for 2022-2024,” Trunov said, after the health ministry approved the lawyer’s appeal for financial assistance. The government will also fund “a free quota for infertility treatment,” Trunov said.

Those who take up the offer will then also be able to retrieve their biomaterial for free within the rules of their compulsory medical insurance.

President Vladimir Putin declared what he called a “partial mobilization” of 300,000 Russians in September, in the midst of Ukraine’s successful counteroffensive in the face of Moscow’s invasion. The real number of mobilized Russians is not known.
