Morrisons to change how it packs customers’ shopping

Morrisons is making a major change to how it packs its customers’ shopping in December as part of a campaign to help certain customers this winter. The supermarket, which has close to 500 stores across the UK, will ask people to donate their time rather than their money as part of a campaign to combat loneliness. It has joined the 1 Million Minutes campaign to introduce ‘Talking Tills’, which will offer customers a slower checkout experience to facilitate friendly chats.

These tills will be available until December 7, and colleagues will have the chance to connect with customers in friendly conversations. The 1 Million Minutes campaign by ITV aims to ease the struggle of loneliness in the UK. Morrisons said it realises that a trip to the supermarket is often the only chance people get to interact with others when they are feeling isolated. The Talking Tills support this by giving customers the opportunity to engage with checkout staff more than they normally would.

David Scott, Corporate Affairs Director at Morrisons, said: “At Morrisons, supporting the communities we serve is at the heart of what we do. We know that for many people, especially at this time of year, a simple conversation can make a real difference.

“The Talking Tills campaign is designed to create space for those meaningful moments, offering customers the chance to slow down and chat if they’d like to.”

Meanwhile, Daniel Robinson, Editor of Good Morning Britain, said: “In the 10 years since we launched our 1 Million Minutes campaign, we have brought together thousands of volunteers with thousands of people experiencing loneliness and isolation around the UK. And this year feels more urgent than ever, with rising prices in the shops and pressure on families, it’s so easy to feel disconnected.”
