MotoGP 2020: World Championship standings – 25 October 2020

Yamaha rider Franco Morbidelli charged up the MotoGP World Championship standings on Sunday with his second race win of 2020.

Championship leader Joan Mir held firm in third place to extend his lead at the top of the standings having made his way through the field from 12th on the grid.

Mir inches ahead

Prior to Sunday’s MotoGP at Motorland Aragon in Spain only Fabio Quartararo had won more than one race. The former championship leader ceded his advantage in the previous race at the venue after crashing during qualifying. He has since struggled to keep pace with the leaders and allowed Mir to build a 14-point advantage at the top of the standings.

Mir claimed his sixth podium finish in the Alcaniz Grand Prix but his advantage is far from decisive with three rounds of action remaining.

“Another podium is a result from 12th on the grid. So for today, a podium is like a win,” said Mir after the race.

“I couldn’t have given much more out there,” he added. “The guys in front were a little bit too far ahead at the start.”

Morbidelli is now just 25 points behind Mir in fourth place on the MotoGP World Championship Standings. Reflecting on his win Morbedelli said: “Amazing!

“I knew I had to make an aggressive race, when I saw clean air in front of me I decided to give everything I could for every lap.”

“The 23 laps went away like this,”the Italian grinning and snapping his fingers.

Realistically all of the top six have a shout at the championship with just 32 points separating Alex Rins from his Suzuki teammate.
