LAHORE:

Waqarul Hassan, identified as one of the ‘culprits’ in the motorway gang-rape incident, presented himself to the police on Sunday.

Waqar presented himself to the CIA Model Town police and denied any involvement in the case.

The CIA officials stated that Waqar belongs to district Sheikopura, adding that the culprit said he has nothing to do with the incident.

A day earlier, the police had identified two criminals allegedly involved in the heinous crime through DNA profile matching and mobile phone tracking, Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Punjab Inam Ghani said.

Addressing a joint news conference with Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar, Law Minister Basharat Raja and Information Minister Fayyazul Hassan Chohan, Ghani disclosed that all evidences collected from the crime scene and preliminary investigation had indicated police towards culprit Abid Ali.

Ghani revealed that the main culprit in the gang-rape case, Abid Ali, of Fort Abbas, was also involved in a similar case registered in 2013. He added that the police tracked his mobile phone calls history, which led them to his accomplice, Waqarul Hassan.

Though, other than the main culprit’s name and an old FIR, the police had no information about the criminals but by using scientific investigation methods and modern technology available with the police and other law-enforcement agencies the police gathered all the related information regarding Abid by Friday night.

The Punjab police chief said that four mobile SIM cards had been registered in the name of Abid Ali during different times but all of them had been closed. However, through his mobile call records police had come to know another number that was used during the criminal act.

“It also helped the police to identify his companion, Waqarul Hassan, a resident of Ali Town, district Sheikhupura,” Ghani said. “Through mobile phone location, we have confirmed that both culprits are in a village near Qila Sattar Shah, district Sheikhupura.”
