Myanmar Army Arrests Teacher of Civil Disobedience Movement in Ayeyarwady

Junta troops have arrested a teacher in the Ayeyarwady region of southwestern Myanmar, claiming she has ties to the shadow National Unity Government, according to pro-junta Telegram messaging channels.

Residents of the Bogale township told RFA on Tuesday that Theint Theint Soe, 30, was arrested on May 23. She has worked as a teacher for eight years and was involved in the civil disobedience movement after the February 2021 military coup, locals said.

“Her husband was arrested a week before. The teacher was arrested the same day her husband was released,” said a resident who did not want to be named for fear of retaliation.

“She was arrested for allegedly supporting participants in the civil disobedience movement.”

Residents said Theint Theint Soen was being held at the Bogale police station, but it was unclear which laws she had been charged with breaking.

Telegram channels supporting the junta said she was arrested because a document certified by the shadow National Unity Government’s education board was found with her.

Nearly 300 teachers from the civil disobedience movement have been arrested since the 2021 coup, according to the Association for Assistance to Political Prisoners.
