NED VC likely to get additional charge at KU | The Express Tribune

The Sindh government has decided to appoint an acting vice chancellor for Karachi University as the tenure of the current VC, Professor Dr Khalid Iraqi, is set to expire next week.

According to sources, NED University of Engineering and Technology Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Tufail Ahmed is likely to be given the additional and temporary charge of Karachi University. A summary in this regard has already been approved by the controlling authority, the Sindh chief minister. A notification is expected to be issued in the next few days.

Dr Iraqi’s first four-year term is ending on July 28. Sources told Express that the Universities and Boards Department had sent a summary to the controlling authority recommending that the charge be given either to KU’s senior-most professor or to the VC of the nearest university. Following it, the chief minister approved the recommendation to assign the charge to Dr Tufail Ahmed as the VC of the nearest university.

Meanwhile, the search committee for the appointment of KU’s permanent vice chancellor has completed its work. After four days of interviews with more than 40 candidates, the committee has shortlisted a panel of three names. The panel will be sent to the Universities and Boards Department for onward submission to the Sindh chief minister after security clearance of the three candidates.

The chief minister will personally meet the shortlisted candidates before approving a suitable name.

Officials said that if there is a clear difference in interview marks, the chief minister generally appoints the top-ranked candidate as VC. They recalled that the federal government’s decision not to appoint the top candidate at Urdu University had previously led to a bitter experience.
