New Toyota SUV For India Announced: Land Cruiser FJ or Corolla Cross?

Toyota has officially announced its new manufacturing plant in the Bidkin Industrial Area, Maharashtra, India. The company has also confirmed that an all-new SUV will be the first model to be manufactured at the new vehicle production plant. However, production of vehicles at this facility will commence in the first half of 2029. Toyota hasn’t reveal the name of the new SUV, but it could either be the Land Cruiser FJ or the new Corolla Cross 7-seater hybrid.

The new manufacturing facility will have a production capacity of 1 lakh vehicles per year, and the new SUV will be sold in domestic as well as select international markets. Previous reports claim that Toyota will launch the Corolla Cross based SUV in the Indian market. The SUV was earlier planned to be launched in our market as a 7-seater SUV, but the project was shelved as it did not meet the technical commercial viability.

It is reported that the project is now back on the table. It is expected that the Corolla Cross will be the first model to roll out from the company’s upcoming facility. The new Corolla Cross will most likely to be offered with a strong hybrid powertrain, which is also available with the Innova Hycross. It is expected to get a 2.0L strong hybrid engine that offers 184hp and a 206Nm of electric boost.

Toyota will also launch its smallest and most affordable Land Cruiser, the Land Cruiser FJ in our market by 2028. This compact rugged off-roader will come as a premium alternative to the Mahindra Thar Roxx. The new SUV is based on a body-on-frame IMV platform that also underpins the Fortuner, Innova Crysta and Hilux. It measures 4575mm in length, and has a wheelbase of 2580mm.

The SUV will be powered by a 2.7-litre petrol engine that produces 163hp and 246Nm of torque. The India-spec model could also get a strong hybrid and a plug-in hybrid option. Transmission choices could include a 6-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual unit. A part-time 4WD system will come as standard. Moreover, Toyota could also introduce the hybrid version of the off-roader.
