An FIR was filed on Thursday against the administration and an official at the private university in Greater Noida, where a 21-year-old student was killed last week allegedly by her classmate, who later committed suicide, authorities said.
Two more people have been named in the FIR, which turned up at Dadri police station in Greater Noida on the complaint from the father of the deceased student, they said.
Shiv Nadar University said it has so far done its best to help address the situation in every possible way and refrained from divulging “specific details” to honor the private lives of the deceased.
It also added that “within the limitations of the lack of a formal complaint” and the fears expressed about the reactions of the student’s family, the university took all possible steps to address the situation.
The third-year sociology student was shot to death on May 18 near the college campus dining hall by her classmate, who then went to her room at the boys’ shelter and committed suicide, according to police.
The duo had been in a relationship for more than a year but had broken up some time ago, a police official said.
Police had launched an investigation to find out where the shooter got the domestically made pistol he had brought onto campus and on Thursday filed an FIR on the complaint from the student’s father, who claimed the death was a conspiracy.
“The defendant had been harassing my daughter and pressuring her to do immoral and wrongful deeds. In this regard, my daughter had informed me and I had informed the university administration to take action against the accused student, but to date, the university did not take any action, which resulted in the accused killing my daughter. daughter,” her father said in the complaint.
He said that the entire murder episode has been captured on a CCTV camera.
“My daughter’s killer had also made a video in the past, which has appeared on social media, in which he mentions the ‘murder’ of my daughter. He also talked about a college staff member, a student and a person from Kanpur in the video,” the father claimed.
“From these facts, it is clear that my daughter was murdered as part of a conspiracy. The fact that the university does not take any timely and effective action in the matter is also a reason for it, ”she alleged, urging strict action against the culprits and the administration of the university team.
ACP (Greater Noida 2) Sarthak Sengar said the FIR has been filed under sections 302 (murder), 354D (stalking), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.
“The matter is being investigated now. All angles related to the case will be investigated and further legal action will be taken based on the findings and evidence of the case,” Sengar told PTI.
The officer said police have yet to discover the source of the .32 caliber handgun that was used by the defendant in the shooting.
Meanwhile, the Shiv Nadar Eminence Institute said it “strongly condemns and regrets” these “malicious attempts” to spread misinformation about the university.
“So far, the University has done everything in its power to help address the situation in every way possible. We have refrained from releasing specific details to honor the private lives of the deceased,” the varsity said in a statement.
The university also referred to a particular issue in a communication from the deceased student to the university in which she mentions that the defendant assaulted her four times in a span of two months.
“The university received an email from the student on March 14, 2023, where she mentioned that she had a relationship with the defendant for two years, and now she had decided to separate. However, the defendant was not willing to accept the split. He wanted the accused not to reach her or her family. She did not want this to be taken as a formal complaint,” according to the statement.
“The university took this very seriously and acted immediately. All necessary steps were taken, including multiple interventions and career counseling for both students. The University also placed restraining orders on both of them within two days, that is, on March 16, 2023,” he added.
The university claimed that it had strongly urged the student to “file a formal complaint” on multiple occasions so that it could initiate even stricter action.
“She did not pursue this as she said she did not want her family to find out and said in her email: ‘my family will not understand the situation. In fact, they will take serious and unwanted action against me,’” the varsity said.
“Within the limitations of the lack of a formal complaint and the fears expressed about the family’s reactions, the university took all possible steps to address the situation,” it added.
