Nostalgic UK restaurant chain to close all 106 sites today as Brits ‘gutted’

All 106 sites of one beloved UK restaurant will close for good across the UK today (Thursday, 10 September 2026). Beefeater announced it would permanently shut all of its remaining UK restaurants at the end of July this year. Parent company Whitbread is pulling out entirely from the branded standalone restaurant sector, drawing the final curtain on the historic 52-year-old steakhouse chain, alongside sister brands Brewers Fayre and Bar + Block.

Whitbread chief executive Dominic Paul laid the blame squarely on punishing cost pressures arising from Government policy. Specifically, recent rises in employer National Insurance contributions and business rates have made the traditional pub-restaurant business model ‘unsustainable’.

Whitbread will now focus its efforts squarely on its highly profitable Premier Inn hotel operation.

The closures represent part of a sweeping £250 million restructuring programme, with around 600 new Premier Inn rooms set to be built within converted restaurant sites.

Numerous former Beefeater locations will be redesigned as smaller, integrated kitchens serving exclusively hotel guests, and will no longer function as public houses or walk-in dining venues.

Any sites that fail to meet the company’s hotel return expectations will be sold off or leased back as going concerns. The sweeping restructuring across Beefeater and Brewers Fayre puts 3,800 jobs at risk across the UK and Ireland.

Whitbread launched consultation procedures after its announcement and insisted it was striving to protect positions wherever feasible by redeploying those affected into alternative roles within its wider hotel business.

After the news was announced back in July, scores of Britons flocked to social media to share fond memories of childhood trips to Beefeater with their families.

Many admitted feeling ‘sad’ about the chain’s decline, while others noted it appeared to have gone downhill in recent years.

One person wrote at the time: “Until I went to university the only restaurant I’d ever been to was a Beefeater. We’d go for various family birthdays. I absolutely loved it.

“A steak or a mixed grill which I never got at home, followed by a Knickerbocker Glory. Fantastic times. I went back a couple of years ago. The place looked run down. I feel sad about this but I guess the fact I hadn’t been to one for 30 years is part of the problem.”

Another shared: “When I was first working away from home, we did events work and the big treat was a Beefeater on the last night. It was genuinely an event because we were used to Neefeater being the family occasion that we would get a few times per year.”

A third added: “The profiterole surprise… the crispy potato skins… the memories lol. We have one about 35 mins from where I live now but I looked at the menu and it looked completely s**t so have never taken the family despite the fond childhood memories of going regularly with my mum dad and sisters.”

Meanwhile, a fourth remarked: “I think there was one in Esher, my mum used to stop on the way home back from Portsmouth as a treat. My absolute favourite. How times have changed.”

Another patron shared: “We’ve gone there for any family gathering in the last 30 years. It was like an automatic meeting spot if someone was coming back into town.”

Meanwhile, a further user concluded: “Beefeater was always a local community hub, whether it’s people going for a pint in the sun or just a quick bite to eat. Like you said, the ones near me are all run down too. Staff were always great though.”
