‘Not a regular fire’: Fire at abandoned Greenville County textile mill remains under investigation

A light haze blanketed parts of Greenville after a large industrial fire Wednesday morning.Multiple fire crews were called about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday to the commercial structure fire in the 200 block of Old Bleachery Road, according to the Piedmont Park Fire Department. When crews arrived, they said they found a significant grass and commercial building fire.Crews contained the fire and are now working to extinguish remaining hot spots. They said a light haze is present in the immediate area — Sans Souci and Cherrydale areas — and may affect driving conditions and outdoor activities. The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services said it was not advised about the fire and any potential hazards or concerns for air quality. A spokesperson for the state agency said, “It’s always advised to not breathe in smoke from any type of fire, even a campfire, since smoke contains various irritants. Our nearest ambient air monitor is a little more than two miles away from this area and hasn’t shown any concerning readings.”As of around 1 p.m., remaining fire crews were leaving the scene, and the fire looked to be extinguished.Officials told WYFF News 4 they anticipate monitoring the area over the next few days. A person who lives in the area said on Facebook that she was told to get ready to evacuate by the sheriff’s office. “We were knocked on our door by sheriff’s office at 3:30 am and told to get ready to evacuate because of the fire. We cannot even see (block over from fire) and soot all over my white car. Avoid cedar lane and blue ridge dr at Swamp Rabbit Trail if possible.”Fire officials said several homes were evacuated. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it is suspicious since the building was empty, according to fire officials. One onlooker who makes deliveries through the area often said fires are becoming a consistent issue in the area.”It’s kind of got to the point where I’m just like, oh, wow, there’s smoke again. It’s kind of desensitized me to it. Buildings on fire, there’s been fires under bridges around here. And it’s just so sad,” Bennett Rogers said.Rogers remembers seeing the smoke and the flames and expecting it to take hours to extinguish.”That’s not a regular fire. It’s not a bonfire. It’s not a person’s backyard pit. A big warehouse like that. I pass it by all the time and who knows how old it is,” Rogers said. The building, according to property records, is an abandoned textile mill owned by Bleachery Road Warehouse LLC. In 2019, Greenville County published a tentative plan to redevelop the old facility as part of a community revitalization plan in the Sans Souci area. The goal was to create a direct connection to the nearby Swamp Rabbit Trail.Seven years later, the building remains vacant and unused. We will update you as we learn more.
