“Not Coco”: ‘Mayans MC’ fans react as character’s fate revealed

Mayans M.C. Season 4, Episode 5 (titled “Death of the Virgin”) came to a tragic end as Johnny “El Coco” Cruz (played by Richard Cabral) was the latest member of the FX show’s cast to meet his end.

Coco was taken out by a volley of bullets shortly after a final heart-to-heart with Hope (Vanessa Giselle). The Mayans member was killed by the Sons of Anarchy, who got revenge for the death of Allesandro Montez (Jacob Vargas) by opening fire at a ceremony commemorating the fallen members of the Sons’ rival club.

Twitter users were heartbroken over Coco’s death, especially as the character had only recently managed to enter recovery after his crippling drug addiction in the last season of Mayans M.C. Soon after the character’s death on the FX show, “Not Coco” began trending on the social media app as users discussed the emotional scene.

One Mayans M.C. fan on Twitter, for example, summed up much of the online discourse around the series when they wrote: “Not Coco [crying emoji and broken heart emoji] Damn now Hope is going to go off the deep end. Right after he got himself clean.”

Many fans were worried for Coco’s girlfriend Hope, who spent Season 4, Episode 5 struggling with civilian life. In the episode, before Coco told her he loved her one last time, she lost her supermarket job after a physical altercation.

A viewer wrote on Twitter: “Damn…No hope for Hope now .. and poor Leticia…got NO daddy…NO ONE!”

Others expressed their shock at how suddenly the character was taken out after surviving so much across four seasons. One Mayans M.C. fan on Twitter, for example, wrote: “COCO DID NOT SURVIVE THAT F****** MOLOTOV WHATEVER AND ALMOST GOING TO BLIND TO GO OUT LIKE THIS WHAT THE F*** ???”

So far, Cabral himself has not tweeted about his exit from the show. But that did not stop his fans paying tribute to him. One wrote, for example: “NO!!!! They just killed Coco!!! No!!!! Coco and Hope were so cute! I knew somethin bad was gonna happen but NOT THAT!! and now no more of Richard Cabral’s excellent acting as a Mayan either…”

Though Cabral’s time on the FX show might be over, he already has two projects lined up on his IMDB. He is set to star in two indie movies: Maze of Fate, in which “an E.R. doctor treats an injured boy from East L.A.—run down by a gang member”; and The Night Between Us, in which: “An innocent Mexican-American teen finds himself at the scene of a murder and out of panic and fear, kidnaps the only witness- a twelve-year old girl.”

Some viewers, however, are not ready to accept that the character’s time on the show may be over. One tweeted: “They better not do Coco like The Walking Dead did Glenn. Next week we better see Coco recuperating in the hospital.”

Mayans M.C. Season 4 airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on FX. Previous episodes are streaming now on Hulu.
