Everyone likes policies that sound good. Not everyone wants to pay for them.
We are beginning to see this as true of the UK’s net-zero strategy as it is of any other policy. A FocalData survey shows, for example, that 40% of people say they “would not accept any increase in my cost of living” to take effective action against climate change, about the same number as those who would not pay more to reduce crime and improve education. Those who think politicians can continue net-zero emissions policies with impunity point to figures like this as evidence they will face rejection.
