Novak Djokovic visa saga LIVE: Djokovic to miss 2022 Australian Open after losing court case

The Serbian Tennis Federation expressed its “extreme disappointment” with the Federal Court of Australia’s decision to deport Novak Djokovic, saying “the farce is over.”

“Politics has defeated sport this time,” the federation said in a statement, noting the nine-time Australian Open champion would be denied the right to potentially win a 10th Open and his 21st grand slam title.

The association said Djokovic had fulfilled all conditions for entry to Australia but “due to political pressures, his visa was cancelled based on ‘public interest’.″⁣

“The interference of politics in sport has opened many burning issues. What message is Australia, twice the organiser of the Olympic Games, sending ahead of the 2032 Games?”

The association asked whether the fact the ATP, ITF and other sporting bodies had not commented, would mean that participants at other big sporting events could also be subject to similar treatment.

“Will sportspeople, even when they properly fulfill all conditions for entry to countries, be able to be crossed out from the list of participants, detained like criminals and deported by political decision?”

The federation said it supported Djokovic as the best ambassador of Serbia.

“We believe and hope that after this injustice committed to not only a historically successful player, but an extraordinary person, Novak will emerge better and stronger, as usual.”
