NRL grand final power outage leaves Rabbitohs fans furious

Thousands of people in Rabbitohs heartland have been left without power to watch South Sydney take on Penrith in the biggest NRL clash of the year.

The power went out on Sunday night in about 3000 homes in the Sydney suburbs of Kingsford, South Coogee, Coogee, Randwick and Maroubra, Ausgrid advised.

The company originally expected the issue to be resolved by 9pm, roughly halfway through the second half of the NRL grand final, but an Ausgrid spokeswoman said power was restored earlier.

She said the power was back on by 7.50pm after an outage lasting roughly 45 minutes.

The spokeswoman said the power supply was changed over to another feeder after crews were called on site to investigate an underground fault.

Angry Rabbitohs supporters took to social media to beg for power to be restored as pictures showed fans switching to phones and tablets to keep watching.

“Are you serious!!! Grand Final Night in the heartland and the power’s gone out!!! WTAF!!!” one person asked Ausgrid on twitter.

The company apologised to anyone affected.

“We sincerely apologise for the problems tonight and understand how much everyone is looking forward to watching the game,” Ausgrid said, on Twitter.

“Our crews are working to get power back to everyone as quickly and safely as possible.”
