NEW YORK CITY (TND) — Former New York City Mayor’s Office Senior Advisor for Public Health Jay Varma admitted to hosting large nude gatherings during the pandemic while urging city residents to remain isolated, according to undercover video posted by podcasterSteven Crowder.
Varma helped guide former Mayor Bill de Blasio’s response to COVID-19, including crucial decisions about public schools and issuing a vaccine mandate for healthcare workers. The doctor stated in the clip, however, he sometimes struggled to follow city guidance.
The doctor explained how he and a group of 10 friends rented a hotel room during the pandemic and took ecstasy together.
“Everyone had a blast because everyone was so pent up,” he said of that experience. “Something about bodies being close to each other, just being naked with friends.”
“The only way I could do this job for the city was if I had a way to blow off steam every now and then,” Varma said at another point in the video.
Varma also admitted these “deviant” sexual practices were “not COVID-friendly” but allowed him to be his “authentic self.”
“It would have been a real embarrassment,” Varma said when asked what would happen if New Yorkers found out about his actions.
New York City Councilman Robert Holden called for an investigation into Varma’s comments in a statement to The National Desk.
“This was the public health expert for the city while it was shut down—he was busy having sex parties,” the councilmember said. “There should be a serious investigation into these comments. It’s alarming, especially with so many first responders, city workers, and everyday New Yorkers losing their jobs or being sheltered in to ‘slow the spread’ while this was happening.”
“Mayor Eric Adams must immediately drop all appeals of lawsuits filed by city workers who lost their jobs due to COVID-19 mandates,” he added. “These individuals dedicated their lives to this city, and especially in light of these revelations, it is unconscionable to continue fighting against them in court. It’s time to rehire these city workers and make things right, Mr. Mayor.”
Varma’s X account no longer appears on the site as of Thursday afternoon. He did not respond to a request for comment from The National Desk via email.
