Young Chelsea midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu has officially joined Southampton on a season-long loan. The 20-year-old, who joined the Blues from Rennes last summer, made 15 appearances during his debut season at Stamford Bridge, mostly as a substitute.
Ugochukwu impressed during Chelsea’s pre-season tour in the USA, scoring against Wrexham, and netting a late equalizer in a friendly against Inter Milan at the Bridge. Despite his strong preseason performances, the depth in Chelsea’s midfield has led to the decision for Ugochukwu to gain more first-team experience on loan.

Southampton, who recently returned to the Premier League by winning the Championship promotion playoffs, will hopefully provide Ugochukwu with the opportunity to continue his development at the top level of English football.
“I feel very happy. Southampton has a great history. A lot of great players came over here and played for Southampton, so I’m very happy to be part of the team now.
“It was a very easy decision. They just came back to Premier League. When I heard Southampton, when I spoke to the gaffer as well, I said, ‘I have to come here.’
“I’m just here to work hard and give everything for the fans and for myself as well.”
