The use of political slogans or statements is prohibited on the field of play and on podiums at the Olympics. Following the incident, the 21-year-old was disqualified by breaking’s governing body. The World DanceSport Federation stated, “Talash was disqualified for displaying a political slogan on her attire.”
This year marks the third Olympics in which a team of refugees is participating, with 37 athletes competing across 12 different sports, including athletics, badminton, and boxing. Afghanistan is represented by three women and three men, a symbolic move by the International Olympic Committee to send a message to the country, where the Taliban has severely restricted women’s and girls’ access to sports and gyms.
